Enjoying the Best of Beech Hedging

By Davis Clark at 2013-04-10 00:37:41
Hedging is a great option to a fence without the metal pieces. One of the more popular hedging plants is the beech species. Beech hedging offers two species: green and purple leaf beech.

Beech plants can be sourced at reputable and established nurseries which can advise on the best soil and care to ensure a healthy flourishing of beech hedging.

Basic information

The beech plant is commonly known as an English hedge with green or purple foliage. The color of the leaves may change according to the season. Beech plants are easy to grow and maintain. There is not much to do with beech hedging except an annual trim.

Beech plant is also known as Fagus. Its leaves are oval in shape that start off with a green color before turning to yellow and russet brown during autumn. The Fagus is known as a deciduous plant with a shedding of the leaves before budding up in February or March.

Beech plants can grow rather quickly to form the desired hedge in its second year of planting. Subsequent years may see a grater sprout which requires an annual trimming to keep the hedge tidy and nice.

Suitability

A beech hedge is very versatile in its wants and needs. Its easy demeanour makes it a strong choice for hedging purposes. The soil should not be too wet to enjoy the best of beech hedging. The best feed for this hedging plant is bone and fish blood to encourage the healthy foliage and strong roots.

The Fagus species is very tolerant towards extreme acidic or alkaline soil. It also thrives very well in shallow soil with chalk. This deciduous plant can grow to be quite large with strong grey barks that can be quite smooth in texture. At its flowering season, one can enjoy some inconspicuous flowers which can bloom into spiny fruits.

Purple beech plants are favored by certain homeowners for their unique copper color foliage. The oval leaves have a wavy edge that is unique to behold. The new shoots of purple beech plants tend to change to a chocolate green color with small green flowers sprouting sometime in spring. This plant thrives best in the sun with moist soil that is well drained. With the optimal conditions, the beech can grow to a maximum of 15m if no trimming is performed.

Pots of beech can be placed 70cm apart to form a nice hedge when it is full grown.
